Overflow metabolism of microorganisms can occur in conventional batch screening, as the entire amount of nutrients is present in the medium from the very beginning. Due to the excess of nutrients at the beginning, the cells reproduce rapidly but often become sluggish. As a result, they no longer form exclusively the target products, but additionally undesired by-products. The process is inefficient and an oxygen limitation and pH inhibition can occur.
